The purpose of this blog is to capture some of my experiences during a deployment to Afghanistan over the next few months.

I was an officer in the Royal Navy and retired some years ago, joining the volunteer reserve afterwards.  So I’m now an officer in the Royal Navy Reserve and fairly heavily involved with the management of my unit.

Following some recent conversations I agreed to be mobilised in support of UK operations in Afghanistan and shortly afterwards received my notice of compulsory call-out, appointing me to a role in Kabul, which I’m now filling having finished pre-deployment training.

In my civilian job I’m a management consultant, spending most of my time in project and programme management and working with a range of clients.

Hi Alistair – and greetings from freezing cold and snow-bound Edinburgh! This blog is a great idea. I’m sure many of us will be following it avidly over the coming months, it will give us insight into real life in Afghanistan that we just don’t get from the mainstream media… and of course it will help assuage our curiosity about what you are getting up to in your absence from the world of PPM consultancy!

Thanks Gill, I thought it would be an interesting exercise to document some of the deployment. And for what it’s worth, it makes a pleasant change from the excitement of business cases, programme plans and change workshops…
